Tape-in extensions are the most popular hair-extension method in West Orlando for one reason: the install is fast, the entry cost is lower than hand-tied methods, and removal is easy enough that you can switch back to your natural hair whenever you want. The catch — and there is always a catch in this industry — is that tape-in is the method most often installed incorrectly.
I see this every week at Will Wyatt Concept. Clients come in from Winter Garden, Hamlin, Horizon West, and Windermere with tape extensions that were placed too close to the scalp, sandwiched with too much natural hair in each panel, or installed without a proper heat seal. The result: bumps you can feel, panels that slide, and (worst case) breakage at the bond line.
What Tape-In Actually Is
A tape-in panel is a thin strip of premium hair pre-bonded with a medical-grade adhesive. Two panels sandwich a thin section of your natural hair — one panel on top, one underneath, adhesive sides facing each other. Done right, the panels lie completely flat against your head, are undetectable by touch, and last six to eight weeks before they need a move-up.

What a Good Install Looks Like
Three things separate a good tape install from a problem one:
1. The right section size
Each panel sandwich needs the right amount of natural hair — too little and the panel slides, too much and it's visible. A skilled tape installer adjusts section size based on your hair density.
2. Placement below the parietal ridge
Tape panels should never be installed above the parietal ridge (where your head curves at the temples and crown). Place them too high and they show through your hair every time you pull it up.
3. A real heat seal
After sandwiching the panel, the bond needs to be heat-sealed with a flat iron set to the correct temperature. Salons that skip this step are why tape slides.
How Long They Last
Properly installed tape extensions need to be "moved up" every six to eight weeks. The panels are removed with a non-damaging solution, the hair is reapplied with fresh tape, and you walk out with the same hair you came in with. Most premium tape hair can be reused two to three times before it needs to be replaced.
Aftercare for Florida Humidity
Tape-in extensions in Orlando's climate require slightly different aftercare than in dry climates:
- Sulfate-free, oil-free shampoo only — oil breaks down the tape adhesive
- Air-dry the roots when possible; if blow-drying, point the nozzle down the panel, not across it
- Never sleep on wet panels
- Skip leave-in conditioners that touch the bond area
- Swimming in chlorinated pools or saltwater is fine, but rinse with fresh water within 30 minutes
