Standard balayage is a French technique developed for Parisian humidity, which is mild. Brazilian air-touch balayage is what happens when colorists in Rio de Janeiro adapted the method for actual heat, actual humidity, and actual sun. For Orlando, that matters more than most clients realize.
Will is Brazilian-trained, which is a phrase that gets thrown around loosely in Florida salons. What it actually means here: Will spent significant time in Brazil learning a specific approach to balayage that's purpose-built for the climate and the way Brazilian women wear their hair. That approach is called "air-touch" — and once you've seen it on someone's head, regular balayage looks heavy by comparison.
The Air-Touch Difference
In a traditional balayage application, the colorist takes a section of hair, holds it flat against a board, and paints lightener across the entire section using sweeping strokes. Every strand in that section gets some level of lift.
In an air-touch application, the colorist takes the section, then uses a blow-dryer to blow the shorter, finer hairs out of the section. Only the longest, strongest strands remain in the colorist's hand. Lightener is then painted onto those remaining strands.
The mathematical result: only the hair that would naturally be exposed to sun is lightened. The shorter, baby-fine, and underlayer strands stay your natural color. When the section drops back into place, you have lightness woven through your hair instead of layered on top of it.
Why Orlando's Climate Demands This
Three things break standard balayage in Florida:
1. Humidity reveals weight
When humidity hits a head of standard balayage, the painted strands swell with moisture and the dimension flattens out. Air-touch leaves more hair untouched, so there's more natural variation to hold dimension when humidity rises.
2. Sun keeps lifting
Orlando sun continues lifting balayage between salon visits — sometimes pushing the color another half level lighter over the course of a summer. Air-touch's untouched underlayer acts as a "buffer," so the post-summer color doesn't end up monotone.
